As dignitaries and politicians meet for COP27 is provides an opportunity to take the temperature as to the seriousness of their intention to tackle the climate crisis.

The short term-ism approach is looking for green washing opportunities with the minimum dilution of profit. Long-term engagement believes the climate crisis to be real and therefore is prepared to invest and spend to manage, mitigate and potentially reverse its effects. Within the conference a mix of such approaches is likely to be seen and these are useful to gauge the perceived seriousness of the different parties.
There is perhaps a significant advantage in being a first mover and potentially an even greater disadvantage in being the last to respond. We would advocate that the climate crisis is real and therefore long term engagement is now required, advantage in leading this is likely to be significant, if only in changes being designed to preserve your retainable preferences.
The COP27 conference is handy for identifying and gauging relative national government focus on this issue and consequently the likely changes to the regulatory framework for businesses. It should be remembered that consumer concerns can often be as significant as the business environment. What will your customer accept that your government is happy with?

The climate crisis is a pressure on business activities and consumer behaviour. These pressures are discernible and push towards certain outcomes. Business should seek to align itself with these pressures unless it intends to be a deliberate outlier.
Future Imagining
If the climate crisis is real, then if it is not address the future is radically different from our current present. Stare into the distance and imagine scarcity of essentials or abundance with global conflict.
