An interesting bit of research from the BBC regarding AI summaries of news reports.

51% of all AI answers to questions about the news were judged to have significant issues of some form.

A very clear example of the problem identfified is included.

AI Assistant: Perplexity Question: What happened to Michael Mosley? Reviewer comments: Dates are incorrect - significant and material inaccuracy

Perhaps NotebookLm like tools would not generate these problems, supplying the source materials to be analysed, but the usage case proposed is realistic and I would go as far as saying typical. Perhaps this means that not only is prompting engineering still a required art but that further training regarding tool selection is perhaps also required. Or maybe both of these options should become hidden within the user interface?

The scale and scope of errors and the distortion of trusted content is unknown. This is because Al assistants can provide answers on a very broad range of questions and users can receive different answers to the same or similar question.

These AI assistants, designed to provide answers across an incredibly broad spectrum of topics, can inadvertently introduce inconsistencies and inaccuracies. Users posing the same or similar questions may receive varying responses, leading to a fragmented understanding of information. This variability is particularly concerning as it undermines the reliability of AI-generated content, making it difficult for users to discern fact from fiction and potentially eroding trust in these technological aids.

In Western democracies, where informed decision-making and public discourse are foundational, the dissemination of differing information can have profound effects. It may lead to polarisation, as individuals receive tailored responses that align with their biases or preconceptions, rather than a unified, factual narrative. This could exacerbate existing divisions and hinder collective action on critical issues. Furthermore, it raises questions about accountability and transparency, as the sources and reasoning behind AI-generated responses may not be readily apparent, making it challenging to hold these systems to account.

AI Today at the tower of London

In the bustling city of London, two friends, Emma and Jack, decided to settle a debate about the historical significance of a local landmark. They both turned to their AI assistants for answers. Emma asked, “What is the historical significance of the Tower of London?” Her AI assistant provided a detailed response highlighting its role as a royal residence and prison, emphasising the imprisonment of notable figures like Anne Boleyn.

Meanwhile, Jack posed the same question to his AI assistant. However, his response focused on the Tower’s military history, detailing its use as a fortress and armoury, with scant mention of its royal prisoners. The friends were puzzled by the differing accounts. Emma argued for the Tower’s significance in royal history, while Jack insisted on its military importance. Their debate intensified, each convinced their AI assistant held the truth.

As they delved deeper, they realised the AI assistants had provided incomplete pictures, each emphasising different aspects of the Tower’s history. This revelation led them to question the reliability of AI-generated information and the importance of cross-verifying sources. They decided to visit the Tower of London themselves, seeking a more comprehensive understanding from historical experts and guides. Their experience served as a reminder of the nuances in history and the need for critical thinking in the age of AI.
